A Wanderer Through a Stone Archway in Pencil

7 min · real-time drawing, no talking · watch on YouTube

A wanderer in a long, windswept coat walks through a stone archway toward the mountains, with flowers growing along the wall and a small basket at the gate. I finish this old graphite drawing in my sketchbook: shading the stones, the coat and the flowers with a mechanical pencil and blending stumps. Real-time drawing with calm music, no talking.

A Wanderer Through a Stone Archway in Pencil — Marah Maitale Art

Seen from behind, a wanderer in a long coat steps through an arched gate in an old stone wall. The wind lifts the tails of his coat, mountains rise in the distance, flowers grow along the wall and a small basket waits at the threshold, as if he is leaving one world for another.

This was an old drawing that I never finished, so in this video I pick it up again. With a 0.7 mm mechanical pencil I shade each stone of the wall, deepen the folds and shadows in the coat and add the flowers, then soften everything with blending stumps.

The video runs a little over seven minutes in real time, with calm music and no talking. Like quiet graphite drawings? Watch the landscape in a glass ball, the tree with roots, or browse more sketchbook drawings.
