A quiet portrait on a page of my Canson sketchbook: a young man with wavy, curly hair looks down, lost in thought, in a loose shirt with a laced collar and small buttons, with a knotted tree curving around him and wild plants with round seed heads growing at his side.

It starts with a few light lines for the profile, the nose and the jaw, then the eye, the ear and the outline of the hair. With a 0.7 mm mechanical pencil the graphite is built up in layers: long curving strokes for the curls, soft shading on the face and neck, and long lines for the folds of the shirt and the bark. Blending stumps soften the shadows and a kneaded eraser brings back the light.

There is no voice-over, only calm music, so you can draw along at your own pace or simply watch the face appear. More pencil art is in the sketchbook drawings.
